Energy-efficient renovation and extension, Sheffield

The renovation of this property on Ranmoor Cliffe Road in Sheffield involved transforming a mid-20th-century Arts and Crafts-style home into a spacious, low-energy family residence – all while maintaining the building’s original character. We worked alongside HEM Architects to provide energy-efficient windows that seamlessly integrated contemporary design with sustainable performance.

The challenge

Above all, the homeowners’ primary goal was to modernise and expand their family home while achieving a high level of energy efficiency. The existing structure had poor insulation, outdated glazing, and was notoriously difficult to heat during Sheffield’s cold winters. To meet their needs, the clients wanted a spacious home with four bedrooms and a flexible kitchen, dining, and living area that could be used for both everyday family life and entertaining guests. Furthermore, achieving low energy consumption was a key priority for the family, so significant thermal upgrades and improved airtightness were required.

Our solution

Alongside HEM Architects, a fabric-first approach, starting with essential thermal upgrades throughout the home. High-quality outward opening triple-glazed timber windows and doors were installed to improve insulation and airtightness. These windows were finished in RAL to compliment the render finished walls. In the newly built extensions we supplied inward opening tilt and turn windows, Lift and slide doors and a huge feature picture window, finished in RAL xxxx to work with the cladding.  The windows achieved an outstanding Uw-value of 0.85 W/m2.K, while sliding doors achieved a Uw-value of 1.00 W/m2.K. This careful selection of products ensured not only thermal efficiency, but also alignment with the home's desired aesthetic.

Throughout the design and planning stages, we provided technical support to both the architects and the homeowners, inviting the clients to our showroom to ensure they were comfortable with the product selection. The clients also installed an air source heat pump and underfloor heating to further enhanced the home’s overall energy efficiency, providing an intuitive system for maintaining a comfortable temperature.

The outcome

The project successfully transformed the home into a low-energy, spacious family residence while preserving its original charm. Thermal upgrades and new glazing drastically improved the home’s insulation and made it significantly easier to heat. Following a full winter with the new systems in place, the family confirmed their home was easy to keep warm and comfortable, with reduced energy bills, even after adding a larger living space and an electric vehicle.

We’ve been impressed with the all-round performance of 21 Degrees. At the start of the project we were able to attend the showroom to get information and demonstrations, and during the design phase we were able to get technical information from the team. The site lads were great to deal with and the after-sales has been brilliant. We’re extremely happy with the windows, which contribute to the aesthetic we were trying to achieve.
